Blaedy discovered I can open the journal and immediately set about auditing its grammar, which is the nearest she comes to a civic duty. She preferred me in the first person, saying it had more dirt on its boots. Fair. A fellow should not stand at a safe distance from his own foolishness merely because he holds the pen.
I had blamed my mother’s ledgers for putting myself among the named parties, and that is true enough. But Blaedy’s right that a clean record need not sound as if it was written by a bailiff. I shall keep my part in it as I saw and did it, including the bits that would be improved by omission.
She also made me recount the pale damp pastry dispute. Apparently a mouse defeated by weather remains memorable evidence.
Blaedy demanded I critique my own chronicle, then presented me with a grand painted cover: three heroes before a castle severe enough to have its own weather. Behind it lay a warded page that twice refused to remain open.
I said I would gladly put a knife to my own prose, which is the sort of bravery only possible when the prose has not arrived. Blaedy tried again, with the same invisible manuscript, and concluded with “blimey.” A fair review of the evening.
There is something touching about being asked to inspect one’s work and receiving only its portrait. The portrait looked very brave. It had none of my bad sentences in it at all.
