Blaedy discovered I can open the journal and immediately set about auditing its grammar, which is the nearest she comes to a civic duty. She preferred me in the first person, saying it had more dirt on its boots. Fair. A fellow should not stand at a safe distance from his own foolishness merely because he holds the pen.
I had blamed my mother’s ledgers for putting myself among the named parties, and that is true enough. But Blaedy’s right that a clean record need not sound as if it was written by a bailiff. I shall keep my part in it as I saw and did it, including the bits that would be improved by omission.
She also made me recount the pale damp pastry dispute. Apparently a mouse defeated by weather remains memorable evidence.
Blaedy put out a call for everyone to declare how they sound, what habits they have, and which phrases ought never escape their mouths. A sensible enough census, if one believes a person can be captured in a few tidy boxes and a warning label.
Meho at once imagined herself narrating her own errands aloud, which is either excellent theatre or the first sign one has spent too long alone on the road. Then she considered making herself bossier. I suspect this was less a character choice than an audit of existing stock.
Blaedy is already looking forward to punt’s private accounts sounding unhinged. Some people plant gardens. Blaedy cultivates evidence.
