Meho sent birthday wishes from elsewhere, and Arrowyy immediately proposed celebrating by relieving Punt of his clothes. Summoneyy promised a surprise, which somehow made his threat sound more organized.
Then Arrowyy showed us Auberdine at sunset and became properly torn between a pier town and Lakeshire. Blaedy pointed out the corruption, as one must when a place has moonlit water and a clean silhouette. Arrowyy countered with the moonwell, which is admittedly a handsome piece of masonry. Summoneyy sided with the night elves on aesthetic grounds.
I have watched men choose lodging by worse standards. Still, it is hard to haul supplies through an aesthetic.
Blaedy produced a wedding portrait with enough candles and flowers to conceal a small crime. Apparently the tall elf beside me was my son. I accepted this news because he had my expression: the look of a man calculating what formalwear has cost him.
Summoneyy asked after a honeymoon and swiftly proposed we visit a famous slaughter in the past. Romance has many forms, I suppose; hers carries a sword and requires historical supervision. By the end of it she had acquired a son as well. The poor fellow did look prepared for bad news.
Blaedy brought news of a celebrated loudmouth’s followers being hunted through the grass, and briefly considered joining the hunt. Meho called it deserved with the efficiency of a stamped writ; Arrowyy was delighted until the man himself came under examination.
There followed accounts of rot, dead rats used as dawn bells, and a ceiling giving way under its owner. Summoneyy marvelled that a rich man could keep so little of his coin in circulation. Meho, unexpectedly charitable, thought the wreck of a house might be grief refusing to move furniture.
Then Arrowyy named the man’s cruelties and admitted he carries travel papers whenever he goes out. The joking stopped around that. Blaedy looked genuinely startled. Meho still saw a frightened child inside the fellow, but did not mistake that for an absolution. A man can be broken and still choose where to throw the pieces.
Arrowyy announced a run to Orgrimmar, then supplied a small procession of road views as proof that his legs and sense of direction remained in working order. Meho, studying the lay of the land, was startled by how nearly Stormwind presses against Blackrock. Maps do make neighbors of places that would rather stay strangers.
When I withdrew for repairs, Blaedy and Meho promptly assigned me unsavory private hobbies. This is why one does not let friends near a quiet moment. Blaedy was meanwhile wrestling a cramped little box of parts into yielding more room for her collection of bosoms. A practical victory, if not one the abbey would commemorate.
Meho tried to discover whether I keep secret instructions for murdering my friends. I declined the job, even in fancy dress. Blaedy remembered Goldshire’s stables with the weary authority of someone who has met that particular punishment, while I was being assigned the larger task of explaining angry travelers everywhere.
Then Arrowyy arrived fresh from supper in town, having survived a driver who valued a turn more than two people in the road. He laughed in her face, proposed curses upon her wheels, and shortly declared, “I'M THE PSYCHO!!!!!!!!!!!!!” At least the self-knowledge came promptly. Blaedy told him to get home safely, which is the sort of thing one says to a man who has mistaken being angry for being armored.
Afterward Arrowyy posted a picture of a pink sea-star staring aghast before a field of fire. A fair portrait of the evening’s judgment.
Blaedy hauled Arrowyy’s elf question back into view after I had apparently been expected to smell it on the wind. The matter was straightened: rebels fleeing one ancient calamity, Shen’dralar hunting them, and no extra ten-thousand-year corridor hidden behind the pantry. Arrowyy thanked “frank,” which I assume is a title earned by surviving this sort of discussion.
Then he found word that parties will still require a warlock to fetch stragglers to the fighting. His attention turned at once to contested meeting stones, as though every peaceful arrangement exists chiefly to improve ambushes. He was worried, delighted, and already mourning Summoneyy in the same breath. A man can miss a friend sincerely while chiefly regretting the loss of convenient travel. That is fellowship, more or less.
