Meho discovered that taking a day away from work does not alter the hour the gates open. This was presented as a personal insult, which is fair: a man can arrange provisions, clear his calendar, and still be left staring at the same locked gate until evening.
I produced the official notice and thereby became responsible for it. Arrowyy assigned me blame with admirable speed. Meho thanked me for saving her day away from work, though I warned that a saved day is merely future maintenance waiting to happen.
The boys do enjoy an enemy with a timetable. It gives disappointment a handle.
Arrowyy intends to absent himself from honest labor on the appointed day, chiefly so he may stand in a long line and be thrown out of it. He knows this, which I suppose is the purest form of devotion.
Meho considered the same and wisely pictured the misery in advance. Summoneyy has spent all her permitted leave already, while Blaedy has taken an entire week—ostensibly for her daughter’s birthday, though the great campaign has somehow claimed pride of place.
They then fixed their eyes on the Hall of Thanes three days later. Arrowyy called it possible; Summoneyy agreed. Nothing steels a party quite like a deadline they have invented for themselves.
